  1. 2) If the thief has access to a Mac OS X install DVD, all he has to do is boot off of the DVD and use the 'Reset Password' utility built into the install disc. This resets the Administrator password to whatever he wants, after which he can reboot and have full control over your Macbook.
  2. Recently had my macbook pro stolen. It's a mid 2012 model with mountain lion so it can reset the OS by just by holding ctrl and the power button. I've done it many times myself so I know all they have to do is go erase the Mac HD and then reinstall OS. I tried to use Find My Mac and it still says offline. It's been almost two weeks.

Hello,

Security options transcend the OS and apply to all partitions on a Mac with a T2 security chip The last trick that Apple Silicon Macs have up their sleeve is Target Disk Mode.

I understand that for Find My Mac to work the mac needs to be connected to the internet.

I know you can wipe clean (command+R) the macbook but this require internet (I had OSX Lion). So if have notified Apple witht the serial number of my mac, for the thief to wipe clean OSX-Lion it will have to connect to the onterent first. Isn't there anyway for Apple to track down where the computer is when the thied first connect my mac to the interent ??

Also, Let's say the thief wipe clean my computer sucessfully. When he will connect to the Appstore, iTune or whatever with 'his' apple account. Will Apple be able to know the serial number of the mac? and therefore block or track down my mac?
